SyBBURE 2021 Graduate Places Second in NASA Student Launch Competition as Part of Vanderbilt Rocketry Team
Alex Stephens, Class of 2021 alumnus, placed second in the 2021 NASA Student Launch Competition as part of the Vanderbilt Rocketry Team. The team also won the NASA Educational Engagement Award for their work with virtual rocketry workshops. The team was awarded a prize of $2,500 from the National Space Club. Congratulations!
SyBBURE Class of 2021 Graduate Awarded Walter C. Criley Prize
Grace DePietro, Class of 2021 graduate, was awarded the Walter C, Criley Prize for her design project titled, “Autonomous Manipulator for Defusing Underwater Mines.” The Walter C. Criley Prize is awarded for the best paper written on an advanced senior project in electrical engineering. Congratulations, Grace!
New Students Join SyBBURE
In June 2021, ten new undergraduate students were welcomed into the SyBBURE community. We are excited to see what they accomplish!
SyBBURE Class of 2021 Graduates Pursue Industrial and Academic Careers
In May 2021, 17 SyBBURE students became SyBBURE Alumni!
Four of those students are pursuing postgraduate education:
Jacob Fine majored in Mechanical Engineering and is now a PhD student in Mechanical Engineering at North Carolina State University
Blake Hanan majored in Biomedical Engineering and is now pursuing a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering at Vanderbilt University
Yoanna Ivanova majored in Biomedical Engineering and minored in Spanish and is now a PhD student in Bioengineering at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign
Stephanie Molitor majored in Biomedical Engineering and is now a Graduate Student in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Texas, Austin
Nine of those students have accepted a position as of June 2021:
Matthew Gothard majored in Mechanical Engineering and minored in Engineering Management and has accepted a position at Formlabs in Boston
Alexander Stephens majored in Mechanical Engineering and has accepted a position at Permobil in Nashville
Kevin Ifiora majored in Chemical Engineering and has accepted a position at Boston Consulting Group in Houston
Donovan Taylor majored in Biochemistry and minored in Computer Science and has accepted a research position at Vanderbilt University along with his entrepreneurial efforts as CEO of Timbre Sound Synthesizer, Inc.
Jesse Li majored in Mechanical Engineering and Piano Performance and minored in Engineering Management and has accepted a position at Utility Global in Houston
Grace DePietro majored in Electrical Engineering and minored in Computer Science and Physics and has accepted a position at National Instruments in Austin
Puxin Xuanyuan majored in Chemistry and Philosophy and has accepted a position at Beyond Meat in Los Angeles
Amelia Taylor majored in Chemistry and Philosophy and minored in Biology and has accepted a research position at Vanderbilt University
Seth Drey majored in Biochemistry and Spanish and has accepted a position at the National Institutes of Health in Washington, DC

SyBBURE student Minna Apostolova wins Barry Goldwater Scholarship
SyBBURE student Minna Apostolova has won the Barry Goldwater Scholarship. The scholarship is for sophomores and juniors at 2 or 4 year universities who plan on pursuing a career in research in the natural sciences, mathematics, or engineering. She was selected from a pool of 1256 nominees — congratulations, Minna!
SyBBURE students Yoanna Ivanova and Emily Layton selected as fellows in NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program
Yoanna Ivanova, current SyBBURE student graduating in 2021, and Emily Layton, SyBBURE alumna who graduated in 2020, were selected for the prestigious 2021 National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program. They were selected based on their potential for significant achievement in science and engineering. Congratulations, Yoanna and Emily!
SyBBURE alumnus Logan Kouba second authors paper published in the journal Molecular and Cellular Proteomics
Logan Kouba, SyBBURE alumnus who graduated in 2020 with a major in Biological Sciences, second authored a paper titled “Thyroglobulin Interactome Profiling Defines Altered Proteostasis Topology Associated With Thyroid Dyshormonogenesis” in the journal Molecular and Cellular Proteomics. Somto graduated from Vanderbilt University in 2019 with a degree in Chemical Engineering and currently works as an Associate Consultant for Bain & Company.
